Game Two Shutout Highlights Quakers Split With Marietta Saturday Afternoon

(WILMINGTON, Ohio) – The Wilmington College softball team dropped a close contest in game one against Marietta College, 5-4, before shutting out the Pioneers 3-0 in game two on Saturday in Wilmington at the WC Softball Complex.

They are now 9-12 overall this season and 2-6 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC).

Game One – Marietta defeats Wilmington, 5-4
The Quakers had a chance to take an early lead in the first game loading the bases with just one out in the bottom of the first. However, a double play on a pop out and throw out at the plate ended the inning.

Both teams scored a run in the second frame. Addysen Stevens singled down the left field line for an RBI to score Ashley Jo Hardesty, who singled earlier in the inning for the 1-1 tie.

The teams both scored two runs in the third for a 3-3 tie. Judaea Wilson started the inning with a single and later stole second base. She was brought home on a Haley Johnson RBI double through the right side of the infield. Later in the inning, Hardesty hit a two out RBI single up the middle for the Quakers second run of the frame.

Both teams once again traded runs in the fourth. Samantha Schwab hit a two out RBI single up the middle to score Kori Cornett, who walked to start the inning and tied the game at 4-4.

Wilmington wouldn't score again in the game one loss.

Game Two – Wilmington defeats Marietta, 3-0
The Quakers struck first in the bottom of the third after they worked out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the second. Addysen Stevens walked before a beautiful Kori Cornett bunt single put runners at first and second with nobody out. Later in the inning, Judaea Wilson hit an RBI single into left field for a 1-0 lead. Haley Johnson would then come through with a two out RBI single into left for a 2-0 lead.

Marietta loaded the bases in the top of the fourth with nobody out before a foul out got one out. The Pioneers pinch hit and their pinch hitter hit a ground ball that looked destined for centerfield. Jocelyn Franz then snagged it, stepped on second base and tossed it to first for a huge inning ending double play to keep the score at 2-0.

A pair of singles chased the Marietta starter in the bottom of the fourth and Cornett would later hit an RBI single down the left field line for a 3-0 lead.

The Quakers would hold the Pioneers the rest of the way for the 3-0 shutout victory.
