Baseball Falls in Game One; Loses on Walkoff in Game Two at Marietta

(MARIETTA, Ohio) – The Wilmington College baseball team was at Marietta College Saturday afternoon for an Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) doubleheader with the Pioneers. They fell in game one, 6-1 before game two was a heartbreaking 3-2 loss on a walk off single.

Game One – Marietta defeats Wilmington, 6-1
The Quakers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Kyle Jennings was hit by a pitch and Dominic Depa singled to right field with one out before Jennings scored on a Pioneers error. The Quakers couldn't scratch across another run in the inning.

Wilmington had an opportunity to score in the top of the third with runners on first and second and one out, but a double play ended the inning. The Quakers had runners in scoring position in the top of the eighth and ninth frames but wouldn't score again.

Game One Notables
Game Two – Marietta defeats Wilmington, 3-2
The Quakers had a runner in scoring position after J.C. Calhoun singled to start the game and stole second, but he wouldn't come around to score.

Wilmington took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth after Kyle Jennings doubled down the left field line to start the inning. Gabe McDowell came through with a big two out RBI single into right field.

Their final run of the game came in the sixth. Calhoun tripled to start the frame before a Jennings RBI groundout gave the Quakers the lead back at 2-1.

They had a chance to retake the lead after Marietta tied it at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh. Calhoun and Jennings hit two out singles with Calhoun reaching third, but he didn't come in to score.

Game Two Notables
  • J.C. Calhoun tied a season-high with three hits, while Kyle Jennings had two hits in the contest.
  • Jennings and Gabe McDowell provided the Quakers RBI.
  • Wilmington had two extra base hits.
  • Calhoun stole his 10th base of the season.
  • Trent Mendenhall tossed six innings and only allowed one unearned run and struck out three.

What's Up Next
Wilmington is right back on the field tomorrow afternoon in Wilmington, taking on the Oberlin College Yeomen at 1:00 P.M.

These two teams will square off for the first time since the 2018 season.
