(NEW CONCORD, Ohio) – The Wilmington College baseball team began play in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Saturday afternoon on the road at Muskingum University. They used a four run seventh inning to come back and win game one over the Fighting Muskies, 5-4 before losing game two, 15-5.
This two game split moves Wilmington to 6-7 overall this season and 1-1 in the OAC. They return home tomorrow afternoon for a 12:00 P.M. single game against Kenyon College.
Game One – Wilmington defeats Muskingum, 5-4
The Fighting Muskies jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The Quakers had a runner in scoring position in the top of the second, but couldn't bring them in.
They scored their first run of the game in the top of the fourth. Three of the first four batters in the frame hit singles, including
Gabe McDowell, who's single into left field scored
Avery Battle to cut the lead to 2-1. They loaded the bases with one out, but no one else scored in the inning.
Wilmington had runners in scoring position in the fifth and sixth innings but didn't score and would fall behind 4-1. However, they broke through in the seventh frame for four runs and a 5-4 lead. An error and two singles loaded the bases with no one out.
Dominic Depa walked to bring in the first run to make it 4-2. Their next run scored on a fielder's choice and error before
Ethan Bunce and
Caden Baker singled in the final two runs to take the lead.
Hayden Wibbeler and
Nathan Powers slammed the door on Muskingum over the final three innings for the victory.
Game One Notables
- Max Gildea led the team with three hits while Avery Battle and Gabe McDowell both had two hits.
- Five Quakers had one run batted in (RBI).
- Battle scored two runs.
- Gildea hit two doubles and Braden Chambers stole a base.
- Luke Chappie earned the win on the mound, pitching six innings of four run (two earned) baseball, striking out five Muskies.
- Nathan Powers picked up his third save of the season.
Game Two – Muskingum defeats Wilmington, 15-5
The Muskies got out to a 3-0 lead after the first inning, but a single run over the next two innings from the Quakers made it 3-2. These runs came on a
Braden Chambers RBI groundout and an
Avery Battle single up the middle.
Wilmington picked up a two-out
Dominic Depa RBI single for an 8-3 deficit in the top of the fifth. Their final runs came in the top of the seventh, also with two outs.
J.C. Calhoun hit a triple into right centerfield before Battle singled him in and Depa doubled Battle in to make it 10-5.
Game Two Notables
- Four Quakers had two hits in the contest.
- Avery Battle and Dominic Depa both had a pair of RBI.
- Depa and J.C. Calhoun each had an extra base hit.
- Calhoun and Eli Hollingsworth had a steal in the game.
- Quakers pitching had four strikeouts, with Brad Miller accounting for three of them over two innings of scoreless relief.
What's Up Next
Wilmington will face the Kenyon College Owls tomorrow at Noon at Tewksbury-Delaney Field. This will be the first meeting between these two teams since 2017.
