Baseball Runs Past SUNY Canton Roos in Doubleheader Sweep Thursday

(MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.) – The Wilmington College baseball team got back on track Thursday with a doubleheader sweep of the SUNY Canton Roos at the Ripken Baseball Complex. They won a pitcher's duel in game one, 3-1 before jumping out to a big lead in game two and never looked back in a 10-3 triumph.

The Quakers improve to 5-3 overall this season and play their final game in Myrtle Beach early tomorrow morning.

Game One – Wilmington defeats SUNY Canton, 3-1 (7 Innings)
The Quakers scored two of their three runs in the first inning. J.C. Calhoun jumped out of the gate with a double to left centerfield before later in the inning Dominic Depa stepped into the box and drove a ball over the right field wall for a 2-0 lead. Max Gildea found himself on third base later in the inning after a double and groundout but wouldn't be brought home.

Wilmington had runners on second and third in the following two frames, but didn't score any more runs as the Roos got on the board and cut it to 2-1. The Quakers rallied with two outs in the top of the fourth inning as Avery Battle walked, stole second and was advanced to third on a groundout. Gildea roped another double to left center field to bring in Battle for a 3-1 advantage.

The Quakers had one more great chance to score in the top of the sixth, loading the bases with one out, but the Roos were able to cut them down at the plate on a groundball and force another groundout to work out of the jam. However, Luke Chappie pitched six solid innings before Nathan Powers shut the door for the 3-1 win.

Game One Notables
  • Dominic Depa and Max Gildea both had two hits in the game, and Depa had a pair of runs batted in (RBI) while Gildea had one.
  • Luke Chappie threw six innings to get his third win of the season, allowing one run on five hits while striking out three.
  • Nathan Powers got the save for Wilmington, striking out two hitters in the final inning.
  • Avery Battle walked twice.
Game Two – Wilmington defeats SUNY Canton, 10-3 (7 Innings)
After Trent Mendenhall struck out the side in the first inning, the Quakers offense went right to work. Avery Battle started the hit parade off with a single and would advance to second on a failed pickoff attempt before Dominic Depa drove him in with a double to left centerfield.

The Roos then got their second out of the inning, but it didn't matter. Kyle Jennings drove in Depa with a double down the left field line before a pair of hit batsmen loaded the bases. Eli Hollinsgworth brought them all home with a three-RBI triple to left center for a 5-0 Quakers lead. The final run came in on a Caden Baker single down the right field line for a 6-0 advantage.

Mendenhall started the game with five straight strikeouts. Depa hit his second homerun of the day over the right field wall to extend their lead to 7-0 in the bottom of the second.

This score held until Wilmington scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth frame. Hollingsworth would get another RBI on a single and the other run scored on a Baker RBI infield single for a 9-0 lead.

The Roos got their three runs in the top of the sixth. Wilmington's final run of the game came on an RBI Kyle Jennings walk with the bases loaded.
