Baseball Loses a Pair of Games to FDU Florham and Cairn Tuesday

(MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.) – The Wilmington College baseball team lost two games on Tuesday against a pair of different teams. Their first game was an 8-1 defeat against FDU Florham before their night cap saw them fall to Cairn University, 12-1. The Quakers are now 3-3 overall this season and will be back in action on Thursday afternoon after a day off tomorrow.

Game One – FDU Florham defeats Wilmington, 8-1
The Quakers had runners in scoring position in each of the first two frames, but couldn't drive anyone in. FDU Florham got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning, scoring four runs, with all of them unearned as Wilmington made three errors in the frame.

The Quakers answered with a run in the top of third on a Dominic Depa sacrifice fly to bring in J.C. Calhoun and make it 4-1. Calhoun was hit by a pitch and stole second before moving to third on a base hit by Avery Battle to put himself in position for Depa to bring him in.

Wilmington had a few more runners in scoring position throughout the remainder of the contest, but couldn't drive them in.

Notables
  • Max Gildea led the team with a pair of hits, including a double.
  • Dominic Depa drove in their run.
  • Ethan Bunce walked twice.
  • Gildea started the game on the mound for the Quakers and struck out eight batters over 3.2 innings of work.
  • The Quakers staff struck out three Devils during the rest of the game while Jackson Blakely and Liam Denehy both worked scoreless outings.
Game One – Cairn defeats Wilmington, 12-1
The Quakers had a runner in scoring position to begin the game, but couldn't bring them in. Cairn scored the first two runs of the game in the bottom of the second. Wilmington's run came in the top of the fourth with two outs. Braden Chambers drove in Gabe McDowell, who had reached on a fielder's choice, with a double to left field to cut the lead to 2-1.

An eight-run frame in the bottom of the fourth from the Highlanders put the game out of reach for Wilmington. The Quakers loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the fifth but couldn't come through with a two out base hit and wouldn't have a great chance to score for the rest of the contest.

Notables What's Up Next
Wilmington is off tomorrow but will be back on the field Thursday afternoon at 3:30 P.M. for a doubleheader with the SUNY Canton Roos.
