(WILMINGTON, Ohio) – The Wilmington College men's lacrosse team won their second game in a row Tuesday afternoon inside Williams Stadium, an 11-8 victory over the Washington and Jefferson College Presidents.
The Quakers found themselves trailing on a pair of occasions in the contest but fought their way back and improved their overall record to 2-1 this season. They are back home in Wilmington for an afternoon game with Alma College Saturday.
Wilmington went up 2-0 early in the game on goals from
Garrett Reigelsperger and
Caleb Mann, before the Presidents took their first lead of the game with three unanswered strikes for a 3-2 advantage. The Quakers scored four of the next five goals for a 6-4 halftime lead, with three of these goals coming on man-up opportunities.
Their lead grew to 9-5 in the fourth quarter on an unassisted goal from
Colin McLaughlin before the Presidents tried to make a comeback. They used three unanswered goals to cut the lead to one at 9-8. However, Wilmington got a pair of late tallies from
Brock Fugate and Mann to hold them off for the win.
Notables
- The difference in the game came in the face-off circle and during extra man opportunities. Wilmington won 16 face-offs to the Presidents six and converted on 3-5 extra man opportunities while Washington and Jefferson were 0-6 in the game.
- Freshman Noah Pressman continued to impress with 16 face-off wins, while also grabbing a game-high eight ground balls.
- Freshman Caleb Mann scored four more goals on a team-high 11 shots and has 11 goals through three games this season. He also dished out two assists for six total points to lead the game.
- Freshman Garrett Reigelsperger scored three goals on eight shots and now has seven goals this season.
- Four other Quakers had one goal in the game.
- Along with Mann, junior Nick Roca had two assists for Wilmington.
- Mann had a team-high six shots on goal.
- Three Quakers caused one turnover.
- Peyton Thompson played the whole game in goal for Wilmington and made 16 saves.
- Wilmington had more ground balls (31-29) than Washington and Jefferson.
