(ALLIANCE, Ohio) - Wilmington's late second half effort not enough against Calvin.
Elijah Cathey opened the game with a three-pointer and a layup for the Quakers. The Knights stormed out of the jump, going on a 12-2 run to take a 19-10 lead with 13 minutes left in the first half. Domenic Farley hit a three to cut the deficit to seven points. Solid defense and a steal by Zach McGuirt led to a layup by Ben Golan, putting Wilmington down 26-20 with eight minutes to go.
The Quakers continued to cut into the Knights' lead with a jump shot by Matt DeBrosse that put the green and white within four points. With two minutes left Izaiah Cathey nailed a three pointer to cut Calvin's lead to 38-35. The Knights held off to take a 41-35 lead heading into the break.
Wilmington cut the deficit to two points after a turnaround jumper by Izaiah Cathey. Calvin responded with a quick 14-2 run with multiple three pointers to jump ahead 56-42 in just three minutes into the second half. An Elijah Cathey hook shot brought the Quakers within ten points against the Knights. Calvin's offense continued to shoot extremely well, taking a commanding 74-59 lead with less than eight minutes remaining. Trailing by 15, the Quakers went on a quick 11-5 run.
Ben Golan got the spree started, scoring night straight points until Farley hit two free throws to put Wilmington within nine, 79-70 with four minutes to play. Wilmington's late comeback effort was not enough, as Calvin pulled away in the final minutes, limiting the Quakers to just eight points in the final four minutes to win 87-78.
