(WILMINGTON, Ohio) - Wilmington knocks off undefeated Centre College behind clutch three point shooting led by Sierra McCoin.
The Quakers found themselves trailing 8-0 early into the first quarter against Centre. Stephanie Altstaetter got Wilmington on the board with a layup after a timeout. Katie Dryer then drained a three as the Quakers clawed back trailing 9-5. Wilmington took a 14-13 lead with a minute remaining after a three by Gabby Russell and two buckets from Ashton Harris and two free throws by Sierra McCoin. Harris grabbed an offensive rebound and got the tip in to fall as the first quarter ended 16-16.
Wilmington went on a 5-0 run opening the second quarter with a layup by Altstaetter and a three from McCoin, forcing the Colonels to take a timeout down 21-16. The Quakers spree continued out of the break with another layup by Harris followed by a steal from Russell who found Altstaetter for a layup. Centre scored their first points nearly three minutes into the quarter with a three pointer.
The Colonels collected themselves and held the Quakers scoreless over a three-minute stretch as the visitors clawed back to trail by one. McCoin hit a three late before Centre responded with free throws as the half closed 31-31.
Out of the break, McCoin again knocked down four straight three pointers. McCoin went 4-4 from deep in just two minutes of gametime to force a Colonels' timeout with Wilmington leading 43-35. Centre rallied back in the third quarter, tying the score after a 12-4 run. The Quakers' offense and ball control struggled as the Colonels took a 49-47 lead entering the fourth quarter.
Each team exchanged baskets before the Colonels scored two straight layups drawing a Wilmington timeout trailing 57-53. Jazz Johnson knocked down a three out of the break, and McCoin hit another three to put the Quakers ahead 60-59 with just three minutes to go. After a Colonels' miss, Ashton Harris joined in and drained a three to extend Wilmington's lead to 63-59. Tied 65-65, Stephanie Altstaetter made a layup to put the Quakers ahead with 35 seconds left. Altstaetter then grabbed the defensive rebound on the next possession and made both free throws to ice the game for Wilmington 69-65.
