(WILMINGTON, Ohio) - For the first time since 2003, the Quakers have won the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Women's Soccer Championship defeating Ohio Northern 3-2 on Sunday afternoon.
The visiting Ohio Northern University Polar Bears were on the prowl early in the first half. The Polar Bears scored right away in the 6th minute. Ohio Northern's attack bombarded Wilmington's defense and Emma Storck for the entire match. Â
Jordan Snyder and the Quakers responded right away. In the 10th minute, Olivia Roye collected the ball and passed to Snyder, who dribbled through multiple defenders and found the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1. Â
Ohio Northern's attack drove right back down the field. Storck made back-to-back saves to thwart the Polar Bears. Wilmington countered, but Avery Minteer's and Alex Wilson's shots could not break their defense. The Polar Bears drew four straight corner kicks, and on their last attempt Ohio Northern scored to take a 2-1 lead in the 24th minute. Â
MJ Little and the Quakers attack continued testing Ohio Northern's defense. Wilmington was unable to break through until a late free kick. In the 34th minute, Gracie King's delivery fell into the box and a Polar Bear defender hit it back into their own net, for an own goal and the half ended 2-2. Ohio Northern took 13 shots in the first half and drew nine corner kicks. Wilmington took six shots but had no corner kicks.Â
The Polar Bears' relentless offense continued right out of the break. Storck faced two shots in the first four minutes and in the 53rd minute made a save. In the 64th minute, Wilmington made an impeccable counter. Alex Wilson took the clearance from her defense and played MJ Little through the middle. Little collected the pass and shot it by the keeper to put the Quakers ahead 3-2.Â
Trailing 3-2, Ohio Northern's aggressiveness ramped up. The Polar Bears had a shot blocked two minutes later and had two corner kicks but could not get a shot on target. Wilson had another chance in the 71st minute but was unable to score. Ohio Northern kept pressuring and kept possession for most of the final 25 minutes of the half. Â
Wilmington's backline would not break under pressure. The Quakers stifled the Polar Bears attack late on their way to a 3-2 victory in the OAC Championship on Sunday afternoon. Despite facing 22 shots, eight on target, and surrendering 12 corner kicks, the green and white reigned victorious at Williams Stadium.Â
