Quakers Fall 82-51 Against Calvin University

(WILMINGTON, Ohio) - Wilmington fell to the visiting Calvin University Knights 82-51 on Tuesday night. 

The first quarter started out slowly between the Quakers and Knights. Gabby Russell converted three free throws to put Wilmington ahead 3-1 four minutes in. Calvin clawed back to take a 9-5 lead with three minutes left in the first. Russell hit two more free throws, and Katie Dryer converted her two to tie the game 9-9. Olivia Trusty grabbed an offensive rebound for a tip in, and as the clock expired, Jazz Johnson nailed a fastbreak layup to take a 14-11 lead into the second quarter.  

Calvin was aggressive to open the second quarter, tying the game 18-18. Bailey Eddleman had a steal and found Stephanie Gandy for a layup to put Wilmington back ahead. The Knights then went on a 15-2 run in three minutes to take a 33-22 lead over the Quakers. Calvin closed out the quarter with a jumper, taking a 36-23 lead into halftime. The Knights scored 25 points in the second quarter to the Quakers' nine points.  

The Knights scored five straight to open the third quarter, leading 41-23. Sierra McCoin and Stephanie Altstaetter each made layups for Wilmington, but Calvin's offense continued to stay in control. The Knights' offensive rebounding controlled the third quarter, giving the Knights 13 offensive rebounds with 11 second chance points and 40 points in the paint. Johnson and Altstaetter both made two free throws to end the quarter, as Wilmington trailed 61-38 heading into the fourth quarter. 

Jazz Johnson opened the fourth with a three pointer. Calvin's shooting kept putting the Quakers behind. Wilmington fought hard defensively but could not keep the Knights out of the paint, falling 82-51.  

Notables 

  • Gabby Russell led Wilmington with 14 points. She shot 10-13 from the line and grabbed five rebounds. 

  • Jazz Johnson scored 11 points, shooting 4-8 from the field. Johnson had two steals and two boards. 

  • Wilmington shot 70.8% from the line.
