(BEREA, Ky.) - Wilmington completes the fourth quarter comeback to take down Berea 65-62 on the road Sunday afternoon.
A steal by Jazz Johnson led to a layup by Stephanie Altstaetter to get the Quakers ahead in the first quarter. Each team took turns losing the ball throughout the quarter with 11 total turnovers, three by Wilmington and eight by Berea. The Quakers took advantage, scoring seven points off turnovers featuring scores from Ashton Harris, Johnson, and Altstaetter. Four Quakers had at least one steal in the quarter, including Stephanie Gandy, Harris, Johnson, and Gabby Russell.
Wilmington opened the second quarter leading 13-9 over Berea. The Quakers went on a 6-3 run in the first minutes following the break with another steal by Russell leading to a layup for Johnson. The Mountaineers cut the deficit to three, trailing 19-16 with under five left but neither team had shot well throughout the quarter. With four minutes left, the Quakers and Mountaineers combined for 4-14 from the field.
After a media timeout, Berea scored four straight to trim the Wilmington lead to 21-20. With just two minutes left the Mountaineers nailed a three pointer to take a 23-21 lead. Russell converted a layup for the Quakers but the Mountaineers late momentum gave them a 26-23 heading into halftime.
Berea jumped out on a 6-2 run to start the third quarter. Altstaetter scored a layup to enter double digits and secure another double-double on the season as the Quakers trailed 32-27. Layups by Sierra McCoin, Altstaetter and a jumper by Russell put Wilmington within one with under five minutes remaining in the third. The Mountaineers led 46-41 heading into the final quarter.
McCoin started the fourth with a bang for the Quakers knocking down a three pointer. Russell followed up with her own three to out Wilmington behind 48-47. The Mountaineers continued to hold onto their small lead late, leading 56-53 with under four minutes to go.
With just three minutes left McCoin converted her and one attempt to tie the game 56-56. Altstaetter sank both her free throws to give Wilmington their first lead since the second quarter. McCoin drained another three to keep the Quakers ahead with a minute to go. Johnson hit both of her free throws to give Wilmington a cushion leading 63-59 with 19 seconds left. The Quakers held on late to secure their comeback win 65-62 over Berea.
