Wilmington Falls Short Late 77-75 in Home Opener to Anderson

(WILMINGTON, Ohio) - Quakers lose in a nailbiter 77-75 to Anderson at home.

The visiting Ravens of Anderson opened the first half and led for the first five minutes. Wilmington responded, and Gabe Green nailed a three-pointer with 13:19 left to give the Quakers their first lead 11-10. There was a total of 12 lead changes throughout the contest. Anderson retook the lead 13-11, but Green scored after a block by Matt DeBrosse and Domenic Farley stole it right back from the Ravens to score a layup to put Wilmington ahead 15-13.

Each team fought back and forth with the lead, changing four times until the final five minutes of the first half. The Quakers took the lead on back-to-back three-pointers from Zach McGuirt, leading 30-25 with 4:54 left. The Ravens went on a strong 12-6 run to end the half, taking a 37-36 lead into halftime.

Anderson jumped out on an 8-2 run to open the second half with a 45-38 lead. The Quakers slowly clawed back with baskets from Elijah Cathey, Izaiah Cathey, and a three from Gabe Green. A layup by Farley with 12:16 to go put Wilmington down by two, 54-52. Anderson went on another eight-point run to take a 62-56 lead with under ten minutes left.

The Quakers' contesting defense helped keep them in the game. McGuirt converted a layup followed by another basket from Elijah Cathey, and a three from Farley put Wilmington back ahead 63-62 with seven minutes left. Anderson retook the lead 67-63 until another three by McGuirt put the Quakers within one again. A steal by Gabe Green led to a fastbreak layup by Matt DeBrosse to put Wilmington ahead 70-69 with 3:03 left on the clock.

The Ravens were clutch from the free throw line late, converting both attempts to retake the lead. Two consecutive baskets put Anderson up 75-72 with just 51 seconds remaining. Izaiah Cathey had a look to tie, but his shot rimmed out with 25 seconds left. Forced to foul, the Ravens went one for one from the line to lead 76-72 until a deep three pointer by Farley put the Quakers within one, 76-75 with five seconds left.

Anderson made the first free throw but purposely missed the second. Farley grabbed the loose ball and attempted to get a shot off but was unable to get through the contact as Wilmington fell 77-75.
