(MARIETTA, Ohio) - The Quakers fell in three sets on the road to Marietta Colege Friday night.
The first set started off close between the Quakers and Pioneers. Tied 8-8, Marietta began to pull ahead. The Pioneers went on a big 11-2 run to take a commanding 10-19 lead over the Quakers. Wilmington snapped off their own run. Kills by Emelia Mohler, Sarah Brown, and an ace by Mohler put the Quakers within five trailing 24-19. Marietta's lead was too much for Wilmington to overcome, as the Pioneers took the first set 25-19.
Both teams were neck and neck to start the second set. Wilmington tied the set 7-7 with back-to-back service aces by Kyra Frasier to open the set. The Pioneers inched ahead but a service ace by Mia Spence put Wilmington within three, down 15-12. Marietta began to pull ahead, leading 20-14 late in the set. The Quakers were unable to overcome the Pioneers offense as Marietta took the second set 25-16.
A combination of stellar defense and good offense by the Quakers helped keep Wilmington and Marietta tied at 8-8 in the third set. The Pioneers then went on a 7-1 run to take a 15-9 lead. The Quakers cut Marietta's lead to six down 23-17, but the Pioneers overpowered Wilmington to take the third set 25-18.
