Exciting Second Match Win Leads Wilmington to Split in Tri-Match Saturday

(WASHINGTON, Pa.) -  The Wilmington College volleyball team split their doubleheader Saturday in a tri-match at Washington and Jefferson College, losing to Hiram College 3-0 before turning around and beating Washington and Jefferson 3-2.

Match One – Hiram defeats Wilmington, 3-0
Both teams traded points throughout the first set, with Wilmington holding a slight 14-12 advantage midway through. However, a 10-3 Terriers run put the set out of reach and Wilmington went down 1-0.

After trailing 24-14, the Quakers fought back into the set with a 5-0 rally led by two Sarah Brown kills, but it was too late as they fell down 2-0.

Wilmington fell behind 21-11 in the final set, but an 8-2 flurry gave them a chance down 23-19. Lydia Bridenbaugh led the way with two kills during this stretch. They would drop the set 25-20.

Match Two – Wilmington defeats Washington and Jefferson, 3-2
The Quakers rolled to a 20-15 first set lead over the Presidents. Lydia Bridenbaugh had four kills and Emelia Mohler had three during this stretch of action. The Quakers held off a late Presidents rally for a 25-22 set win and 1-0 match lead.

Washington and Jefferson tied the match with a 25-20 set two victory. The Quakers held a consistent four-point lead throughout the third set, but the Presidents tied it late at 21-21. Sarah Brown made it 22-21 with a kill before a pair of Mohler aces put the score at 24-21. A Bridenbaugh kill eventually gave Wilmington a 2-1 match lead.

The Quakers couldn't make the comeback in set four and lost 25-23 to send it to a deciding fifth set. Wilmington roared out to a 9-4 lead in the final set, led by Presidents errors. The Quakers inched closer to victory, but an 8-4 Presidents rally cut the lead to one at 13-12. Wilmington hung tough though and won the final two points for a 3-2 match win.

Notables
  • This was the Quakers second five set match of the season and first five set win of the season.
  • Freshman Lydia Bridenbaugh had 23 kills, the most by a Quaker since Sarah Brown had 21 vs. Capital University on Oct. 23, 2024.
  • Bridenbaugh hit an impressive .346.
  • Emelia Mohler had 13 kills while Brown and Brinlee Preston both recorded 10.
  • Kyra Frasier recorded a career high 36 assists and Emma Specht had 19.
  • Logan McQuillin had a career high 30 digs while Magee Fain (12), Specht (11), and Frasier (10) all had double-digit digs.
  • Preston had four block assists and Brown had three.
