(ADA, Ohio) – The Wilmington College men's basketball team battled the Ohio Northern University Polar Bears Wednesday night on the road, falling 84-67 in the ONU Sports Center. The Quakers fell behind by 15 points at halftime and despite going point for point with Ohio Northern in the second half, it wasn't enough.
They drop to 2-10 overall this season and 0-5 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC).
The two teams quickly found themselves tied at 9-9 less than five minutes into the game. The Polar Bears then ripped off a 5-0 run for a 14-9 lead before Wilmington came out of a 30 second timeout on fire. They went on a 12-2 flurry that gave them a 21-16 advantage with 11:28 remaining in the first half. The run was fueled by six points from
Zach McGuirt.
Unfortunately for the Quakers, Ohio Northern finished the first half on a 28-8 run to take a 44-29 lead into the locker room. An
Obed Achirem three pointer briefly cut the lead to nine points at 44-35 early in the second half, but that was as close as the Quakers got.
Notables
- For the second game in a row, senior Obed Achirem led the Quakers in scoring, recording 12 points in the game. He has seven games this season with 12 or more points.
- Junior Zach McGuirt scored a career-high 11 points for Wilmington. He was 4-6 from the field and 2-4 from beyond the arc.
- Freshman Matt DeBrosse led the team with three rebounds, while five Quakers had two rebounds in the game.
- Junior Elijah Cathey led the team with three assists, and five Quakers had two assists.
- Four Quakers tied for the game high with one block.
- Achirem led the team with three steals and Domenic Farley had two steals.
- The Quakers outshot the Polar Bears 52.9% (27-51) to 51.9% (28-54) from the field and 46.7% (7-15) to 37.5% (9-24) from the three-point line.
- This was the Quakers best game shooting from the field this season and second-best game from beyond the arc.
- Wilmington had 35 points off the bench compared to Ohio Northern's 15.
- The difference came at the free throw line where the Polar Bears knocked down 19 free throws on 22 attempts to the Quakers six free throws on seven attempts.
