Men's Basketball Breaks Through in Big Win at Otterbein

(WESTERVILLE, Ohio) – The Wilmington College men's basketball team got over the hump Wednesday night with a big 58-57 win over the Otterbein University Cardinals on the road at the Rike Center. After losing three straight games by three points or less, the Quakers broke through and hung on in the final seconds of the game, fending off a late off balance three-point attempt by the Cardinals. The win improves Wilmington to 3-13 overall this season and 1-8 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC).

The Cardinals held a steady lead throughout the first half, leading by as many as seven points and never trailing during the first 20 minutes of action. They held a 29-24 lead heading into the locker room.

Wilmington exploded out of the break with an 8-0 run to take a 32-29 lead with 17:39 remaining in the game. Elijah Cathey scored all nine points during this rally for the Quakers, single-handedly giving them the lead.

Both teams traded points before Cathey knocked down a three pointer with 8:04 to play, giving Wilmington a slight 46-44 advantage. From this point forward, the Quakers used a 7-2 run to grab a seven-point 53-46 lead with just over five minutes left.

The Cardinals cut the lead down to one on two occasions over the final minutes but couldn't tie or take the lead as Wilmington picked up a huge 58-57 victory.
