(WILMINGTON, Ohio) - The Wilmington College men's basketball team started their home season with a great win Wednesday night over the visiting Earlham College Quakers in the Quaker Bowl. The Quakers improve to 1-1 on the season, with Earlham dropping to 0-2.
The first half started a little shaky for the Quakers but as time went on they picked up the pace. To start the scoring for Wilmington, Gavin Helmlich hit a three-pointer with 18:46 left in the first half. Followed by a good defensive stop and a rebound by
Rashid Chisholm, the Quakers made a break down the court, ending with a layup by
Obed Achirem. The Earlham Quakers kept the game close with a couple of made shots to tie the game up at 15-15 with 11:25 left in the half. With 1:51 remaining in the first half, the Quakers grabbed a 10-point lead with a Chisholm made free throw. Right before the buzzer,
Jed Smith hit a three-pointer to make the score 44-30 in favor of Wilmington, before a late Earlham three sent it into the locker room at 44-33.
The Quakers, up 11 points to start the half, looked to increase their lead. To get the scoring started in the second half for the Quakers, Chisholm made a layup. As the second half went on, the Quakers steadily grabbed a 20 point lead. To claim that lead, Heimlich made a three-pointer with 10:44 remaining in the game. To continue the scoring and keep a solid lead,
Ben Golan made a layup to make the score 72-54 with 5:51 to play. With 1:32 left in the game,
Bryce Bird made a layup to help secure the win for Wilmington. The Quakers won the game 86-67.
