Defense Shines as Quakers Win First Game of the Season Over Otterbein

(WILMINGTON, Ohio) – The Wilmington College football team picked up their first win of the 2024 season this afternoon, 31-21 in Williams Stadium against Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) foe Otterbein University. This marks the first win of head coach Kevin Burke's Quakers career as Wilmington improves to 1-5 overall this season and 1-4 in the OAC.

The Quakers kicked a first quarter field goal of 29 yards from Connor Bucksath to make the game 3-0 just over five minutes into the game. This score would hold until under 30 seconds remained in the second quarter, where Cayden Lassiter found Vincent Berardi for a 25-yard Cardinals score to make it 7-3 Otterbein at the break.

Wilmington scored late in the third quarter on a 50-yard pick six from Jayden Fulsom to give the Quakers a 10-7 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The defense scored again early in the fourth on a Gavan Hunter 23-yard scoop and score after the Cardinals punter muffed the snap on his punt attempt, making the score 17-7.

A 76-yard Cardinals punt return made it a one possession game at 17-14 with 8:28 remaining in the game. Wilmington put the game away with a pair of solid drives that resulted in Isaac Ross short touchdown runs before a late Cardinals score made the final score 31-21.
