(WESTERVILLE, Ohio) – For the first time since the spring 2021 COVID season, the Wilmington College men's soccer team knocked off the Otterbein University Cardinals. The Quakers marched into Westerville tonight and beat an always solid Cardinals squad, 2-1.
This gets the Quakers back in the win column after suffering their first loss of the season Saturday night at Mount Union. Wilmington is now 10-1-3 overall and 3-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). The Quakers are tied for third in the conference with John Carroll University and Capital University. Ohio Northern University and the University of Mount Union sit at the top of the standings at 4-0.
Wilmington took the lead in the 19th minute on a crazy goal from freshman
Parker Burke. He passed it to
Jace Houck before making a move around his defender and getting the ball back from Houck. Burke then hit the ball with the bottom of his foot, where it had some English on it and beat the keeper to his left and curved back into the net for a 1-0 lead. The Cardinals struck back in the 33rd minute and tied the game at 1-1 heading into the locker room.
Neither team would score again until the 78th minute. Here,
Kaden Young tried to work around his defenders in the box before being tripped up, forcing a penalty kick. Young converted the kick and gave the Quakers a 2-1 lead. The Cardinals took four more shots for the remainder of the game, with one on goal, before the Quakers earned the victory.
