Quakers Drop Road Doubleheader at Mount St. Joseph

(CINCINNATI, Ohio) - The Quakers fell in both games of their doubleheader to the Lions of Mount St. Joseph University on Monday night. 

Game 1 – 10-0 (6 Innings) Loss 

Both teams were scoreless through the first inning until the hosts jumped ahead in the bottom of the 2nd. Megan Spence conceded a one-out walk, followed by a double and single to score the Lions' first run of the night. Alasandra Spears and Jocelyn Franz each singled in the top of the 3rd but were stranded. 

Spence worked around two hits in the latter half of the third before giving up three more runs in the bottom of the 4th. Spence allowed four straight hits, with the third single coming after an error that brought in the third run of the inning. Trailing 4-0, Audrey Gildea relieved Spence to get the final out. The Quakers stranded Maddie Starnes and Spears on base in the top of the 5th. 

Mount St. Joseph erupted for six runs on five hits in the bottom of the 6th to take the first game 10-0.  

Game 1 Notables 

Game 2 – 5-4 Loss 

Wilmington jumped ahead after a triple by Spears in the top of the 1st inning. Ashley Jo Hardesty singled her home with two outs to go ahead 1-0. Belle Baughman walked the first batter of the inning before allowing a single and a double to tie the pair 1-1. 

Gildea and Addysen Stevens each singled in the top of the 2nd but were left on base. The hosts led off the bottom half with a single before the next two batters reached base. A two-out single pushed Mount St. Joseph ahead 3-1. The Quakers got one back in the top of the 3rd. Hardesty reached on a fielder's choice before Masino doubled her home to cut the deficit to 3-2.  

Baughman worked arount two straight singles to escape the bottom of the 3rd unscathed. Wilmington rallied in the next half. A single by Jobey Hattan put her on base before Stevens reached on a fielder's choice. Stevens stole second and was plated home from a single by Franz. Spears continued her hot streak with go-ahead RBI single to left center, putting the Quakers ahead 4-3. A hit-by-pitch and two straight singles by the Lions tied the game 4-4, forcing Baughman out for Maddie Geminden. The reliever came through getting the final two outs to strand a pair.  

The hosts took the lead in the bottom of the 5th after a one-out double put a player in scoring position. Geminden forced a groundout before giving up a single to put the Lions up 5-4. Stevens walked in the top of the 6th but was left on base. Spears led off the top of the 7th with a double, putting the tying run in scoring position before the next three batters went down in order. 

Game 2 Notables 

  • Spears led the Quakers going 3-4 at the dish with one run scored and one RBI. She had two extra-base hits, a double and a triple. 

  • Franz and Hardesty both went 1-4 with an RBI and a run scored. 

  • Masino finished 1-4 with an RBI and a double.  

  • Gildea and Hattan went 1-3. 

  • Stevens was 1-2 with a run scored, a walk, and one stolen base. 

What's Up Next 

The Quakers return home to host the Comets of Capital University on Wednesday and celebrate Senior Day against the Otterbein University Cardinals on Saturday.
