Offensive Outbursts and Complete Game Secures the Quaker Bowl for Wilmington

(WILMINGTON, Ohio) - Wilmington completed a Quaker Bowl sweep on Tuesday afternoon, taking both games from Earlham College. The green and white rallied for a 12-7 win in game one before riding a complete-game effort to a 4-1 victory in the nightcap.

Game 1 – 12-7 Wilmington Victory

The Quakers started hot, scoring two runs in the bottom of the 1st. Jocelyn Franz reached on an error, bringing up Kymberlin Masino who sent a towering shot over the left field fence, putting Wilmington ahead 2-0. Ashley Jo Hardesty doubled, but the final two batters were retired.

Earlham answered with three runs in the top of the 2nd. Audrey Gildea walked both batters to open the inning. A fielder's choice brought in the first run, and then an RBI single up the middle tied the score 2-2. Gildea got a swinging strikeout, but a two-out double drove in the go-ahead run. Hardesty got the Quakers out of the jam by picking off the runner at third.

Gildea led off with a double in the bottom of the 2nd but was stranded on base. Earlham tacked on two more runs in the top of the 3rd with a leadoff opposite field home run to right. Two straight singles and a walk led to a fielder's choice which brought in Earlham's fifth run, taking a 5-2 lead.

Grace Glaser relieved Gildea in the top of the 4th to record the final out, leaving two on base. Two straight singles by Alaina Eldridge and Alasandra Spears kicked off the Quakers' rally. Gildea picked herself up with a frozen rope single to right field, scoring two. Jobey Hattan singled next, moving Gildea to third. An error by the shortstop drove in the third run of the inning, tying the score 5-5 with zero outs. After moving the runners over, Megan Spence grounded into a fielder's choice, scoring the go-ahead run to take a 6-5 lead. A deep flyout by Hardesty capped off a four-run inning for Wilmington.

The green and white extended their lead in the fifth after a double by Eldridge, a hit-by-pitch and a walk put on Spears and Gildea. Hattan laced a triple to center, clearing the bases and putting the Quakers ahead 9-5. A pinch-hit single by Grace Cline drove in Hattan, putting Wilmington ahead 10-5. A single by Hardesty scored two, making it 12-5 Wilmington.

Earlham got two runs back in the sixth, but Megan Spence relieved Glaser and recorded the final four outs, securing the 12-7 win for Wilmington.
