(WILMINGTON, Ohio) - Wilmington trailed for nearly three full quarters, until clawing back in the fourth quarter but ultimately falling in overtime 74-64 against Marietta.
Jazz Johnson opened the game with a deep three for the Quakers, followed by two free throws from Stephanie Altstaetter. Trailing by one, Gabby Russell nailed a three-pointer for Wilmington in the 6:11 mark. Neither team scored for nearly four minutes, until Russell converted her and-one attempt, with Wilmington leading 11-6 with 2:24 in the first quarter. Marietta went on a 9-0 run, closing the quarter with a 15-14 lead after Altstaetter sank two free throws.
The Pioneers started the second quarter on a 7-0 run until Johnson scored a layup with 6:20 left. Wilmington snapped off a quick 5-0 run, featuring a three-pointer by Reese Pittman and a layup by Russell to put the green and white within one. Marietta closed out the first half with back-to-back layups, leading 30-24 at the break.
The Quakers and Pioneers each traded baskets throughout the third quarter, scoring 18 points each. Sierra McCoin opened the scoring for Wilmington with a deep three. Now trailing 39-27, McCoin and Pittman both went back-to-back from deep to cut the Quakers' deficit to eight, 41-33. After a missed layup by Marietta, Johnson joined in on the fun and nailed another three for the Quakers. The visitor's scoring continued throughout the third quarter, as McCoin knocked down a jumper to close the quarter with Wilmington trailing 48-42 heading into the fourth.
Wilmington's defense played their best in the fourth quarter, limiting Marietta to just 12 points, the lowest of the four quarters. Altstaetter kicked off the Quakers' comeback, making two straight layups. Russell hit two free throws, cutting the deficit to just two points. The Pioneers extended their lead up to six with 4:19 to go. Johnson responded with a layup, followed by two free throws from McCoin. Trailing by six again, Olivia Trusty drained a three pointer after a Quaker timeout. Marietta missed, and Altstaetter was fouled on the rebound, drawing her to the line as she nailed both free throws to put Wilmington within one.
After a turnover with 2:03 left, Altstaetter put the Quakers ahead with a layup. The senior's great game continued, as she had two blocks against the Pioneers. With 39 seconds to go, Johnson drove and got fouled, making only one free throw to put Wilmington ahead 60-58. The visitors went quickly, tying the game with 32 seconds left. After another timeout, the Quakers drew up a good look, but Altstaetter was blocked, and the Pioneers missed the game winner, sending the contest to overtime.
Marietta dominated the overtime, opening the five-minute period with an 11-0 run. Wilmington failed to score until the 48 second mark, as the Quakers fell 74-64 at home.
