Quakers Split Saturday Behind 12-1 Opening-Game Win

(BRIDGEWATER, Va.) - Wilmington splits their two games on Saturday afternoon, defeating Mount Aloysius 12-1 before falling to McDaniel 13-4.

Game 1

The Mounties got on the board in the bottom of the 1st. A leadoff single, sacrifice bunt, and a passed ball put a runner on third base. Spence walked the next batter, and after another wild pitch the runner moved to second base, putting two runners in scoring position. Spence ultimately walked the next two batters, bringing in a run. The freshmen escaped the jam only allowing one run by striking out the next batter and then forcing a fielder's choice.

After squandering an opportunity in the top of the 2nd, the Quakers stormed ahead in the top of the 3rd. Maddie Starnes earned a walk to lead off the inning. After Jocelyn Franz and Kymberlin Masino both got out, Starnes advanced to second on a wild pitcher. Ashely Jo Hardesty drove her in with a single to left, and then Alaina Eldridge cracked a double to center, scoring Hardesty. Leading 2-1 with two outs, Addysen Stevens walked and Audrey Gildea drove in Eldridge with a single to put Wilmington ahead 3-1 entering the bottom of the 3rd.

The Quakers put up a five spot in the top of the 4th. Megan Spence led off with a single and then stole second, followed by a walk from Starnes. The Mounties called the bullpen, and Franz laid down a sacrifice bunt, moving the pair over and reaching first base. Masino singled in Spence and then Hardesty drove in Starnes with a sacrifice fly. Masino stole second base and then Alaina Eldridge crushed a three-run home run to left field, putting the green and white ahead 8-1.

Wilmington's offense continued to roll in the top of the 5th. Spears singled to lead off and advanced to second after an error. She moved to third on a wild pitch. Spence singled, and then Starnes drove in Spears with a sacrifice bunt. Both Franz and Masino walked, and Wilmington's lead jumped to 11-1 after an error, scoring Franz and Spence. An RBI single by Stevens gave Wilmington a 12-1 lead, putting Mount Aloysius in danger of being run ruled.

Grace Glaser relieved Spence in the bottom of the 5th for her collegiate debut. The freshman struck out the first batter and last batter, going 1-2-3 to put an exclamation mark on Wilmington's 12-1 win.
