Quakers Swept in Doubleheader but Show Promise

(DANVILLE, Ky. ) - In a two-match evening, Wilmington dropped both matches to Centre College and Asbury University, but showed promise in each match. 

Match 1 - Centre Defeats Wilmington, 3-0
In the first match against the host Centre College, the Quakers lost to the Colonels. Wilmington dropped the first set 25-14 to Centre. 

The Quakers and the Colonels fought back and forth in the second set. Wilmington took the lead early, and after multiple score changes, the teams were tied 14-14. Centre was able to push ahead, but the Quakers came within one down 22-21. The Colonels were able to finish the set off, winning 25-22. 

Centre went on a run early jumping ahead 6-1 in the third set. The Colonels' run proved to be too much for the Quakers as Centre finished the set off 25-16 to sweep the match. 

Aubrey Clark and Sarah Brown each had 6 kills for the Quakers, and Jobey Hattan had 3. Logan McQuillin led the team with 9 digs, while Jarika Hart and Hattan both had 5. 

Match 3 - Asbury (Ky.) Defeats Wilmington, 3-0
Wilmington lost its second match of the evening against Asbury University in three sets but showed their potential.

The Eagles jumped ahead in the first set, but the Quakers were only down by one 15-14. Asbury was able to keep their offensive momentum and defeated Wilmington 25-19.

Asbury once again took a large lead, up 19-11 at one point. The Quakers rallied back only behind 3, but the Eagles held on and won the set 25-18. 

The Quakers dropped the third set 29-27, but not without a fight. After being tied 9-9, Wilmington took the lead 15-13 until Asbury tied it at 15 apiece. The lead continued to change as the Quakers clawed back, tying the score 24-24. Heading into match point, Wilmington took a 25-24 lead until Asbury tied it once again at 25-25. With each team fighting to secure the match point, the lead alternated multiple times. Tied 26-26, the Eagles won two of the next three sets to finish the sweep 29-27. 

Magee Fain led the Quakers with 8 kills, while Sarah Brown and Emelia Mohler had 6 a piece. Logan McQuillin led the team with 19 digs, while Kyra Frasier and Jarika Hart added 10 each.
 

What's Up Next

Wilmington returns home to host the Quaker Classic on Friday, September 5, at 4:00 pm with their home opener against Franklin College. The Quakers will face Alma College at 6:00 pm that night as well. Wilmington will finish the Quaker Classic against Manchester College on Saturday, September 6, at 6:00 pm.
