Starnes Leads Quakers Past John Carroll in Game One Before Game Two Defeat

(UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio) – The Wilmington College softball team played a doubleheader on the road at John Carroll University this afternoon, winning game one 2-1 before dropping the second contest, 9-4. The Quakers are now 16-19 overall this season and 5-11 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC).

Game One – Wilmington defeats John Carroll, 2-1
Maddie Starnes hit a double into left center field in the top of the second inning but didn't score before the Blue Streaks took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Wilmington had a runner at third with two outs in the top of the fourth but couldn't bring her home.

The Quakers struck in the top of the sixth inning with two outs. Haley Johnson hit a single earlier in the inning and Starnes later brought her home with a go-ahead two-run homerun over the left field wall for a 2-1 advantage. Wilmington held off John Carroll for the victory.

Game One Notables

  • Starnes had both RBI for the Quakers after hitting the first homerun of her collegiate career.
  • Makenzie O'Neil spun a gem in the circle for the Quakers, striking out five Blue Streaks in a complete game, only allowing one run on seven hits. This is her second straight complete game and first seven inning complete game of her collegiate career.

Game Two – John Carroll defeats Wilmington, 9-4
The Blue Streaks held a 5-0 lead after five innings of play. Wilmington had their best chance to score to this point in the top of the fifth inning after a single and double put runners at second and third with two outs. Unfortunately, a fly out ended the frame.

The Quakers struck for four runs in the top of the sixth. Samantha Schwab hit a two-run homerun to left center field after a single and fielder's choice began the inning, cutting the lead to 5-2. An error later in the inning kept the rally going before Claire Scully and Alasandra Spears came through with RBI singles for a 5-4 deficit.

John Carroll answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame. Wilmington loaded the bases in the seventh but couldn't bring home any more runs in the loss.
