(MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.) – The Wilmington College baseball team split their doubleheader with the Lesley University Lynx on Sunday during their first day of their spring break trip in Myrtle Beach. They won game one 17-8 in seven innings before the Lynx made a late comeback for a 6-5 victory in eight innings during game two. The Quakers are now 3-1 overall to begin the 2025 season.
Game One – Wilmington defeats Lesley, 17-8 (7 Innings)
The Quakers exploded for six runs in the first inning, all of which came with two outs. Wilmington was helped by wild pitches and walks before
Gabe McDowell and
Avery Battle both delivered 2-RBI singles.
Ethan Bunce had the final RBI of the inning with a double into center field for a 6-0 lead.
A
Kyle Jennings triple and
JP Donelan double plated three more runs for the Quakers over the next two frames for a 9-2 advantage. The Lynx cut the lead to 9-6, but eight more runs over the final three innings put the game out of reach.
The three runs in the fifth inning all came with two outs. Wilmington loaded the bases before McDowell came through with another RBI single and
Braden Chambers had a 2-RBI single to follow.
Walks and a passed ball accounted for three of the Quakers runs in the final inning. The other two came off the bat of
J.C. Calhoun, who singled into center field for two RBI.
Game One Notables
- Gabe McDowell had three hits in the game, while J.C. Calhoun, Max Gildea, and Braden Chambers all had two hits.
- McDowell and Avery Battle led the way with three RBI a piece.
- Four other Quakers drove in two runs.
- Gildea scored four runs while Kyle Jennings and Dominic Depa scored three.
- Jennings and Depa both walked three times in the game.
- Six different Quakers had an extra base hit.
- On the mound, Wilmington combined for seven strikeouts, with Nathan Powers leading the team with four over two innings of work.
Game Two – Lesley defeats Wilmington, 6-5 (8 Innings)
The Quakers continued to swing hot bats with two outs in game two, as they picked up a big two out base hit from
Kyle Jennings to score the first run of the game in the first inning.
Braden Chambers had an RBI fielder's choice in the second inning for a 2-1 lead.
Their lead increased to 4-1 in the bottom of the third frame. A walk and double put a pair of runners in scoring position before an infield single from
Avery Battle and
Hayden Koonce fielder's choice scored the Quakers runs.
Lesley scored four unanswered runs to grab a 5-4 lead in the top of the seventh. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, pinch hitter
Evan Brauch came through with a huge single up the middle to tie the game at 5-5. Unfortunately for Wilmington, the Lynx scored in the eighth and the Quakers couldn't answer in the loss.
Game Two Notables
- Avery Battle led the team with three hits.
- Five different Quakers had one RBI and one run scored.
- Kyle Jennings walked three times.
- Trent Mendenhall pitched 4.2 solid innings, striking out four hitters while allowing three runs (two earned).
