Quakers Sweep Hanover; Run Rule in Game 1, Comeback in Extras in Game 2

(WILMINGTON, Ohio) It was the 'Tale of Two Quakers' in Wilmington's 13-5 and 6-5 doubleheader sweep of the visiting Hanover Panthers in Wilmington on Saturday afternoon.

Game one saw Belle Baughman go the distance, giving up five runs off nine hits, all five runs coming in the second inning.

Game two saw a much closer game between the Panthers and the Quakers, with the Quakers giving up one run in each of the final three innings of regulation after leading 2-1 through the game's early stages, finally ending it with an extra-inning Claire Scully double to the center-field fence, scoring Ashley Jo Hardesty. Hardesty hit a single just one at-bat earlier, scoring CiCi Harding to tie the game.

Kori Cornett went perfect from the plate across both games, going 4-4 in each game, with a double in game two, scoring three runs and 4 RBIs.

Judaea Wilson went 4-7 on the day with a double, two runs, and 4 RBIs.

GAME ONE

The Quakers jumped out early in the bottom of the first, with Jocelyn Franz scoring on a Judaea Wilson single down the right-field line.

The next two Quaker runs came on outs. Sam Schwab hit a sacrifice fly to left to score Kori Cornett, and Wilson scored on a Haley Johnson groundout to short to leave the bottom of the first with the 3-0 lead.

Then Hanover came out in the top of the second and hit Baughman hard.

The seven-hitter Sydney Foy doubled to left center, scoring Meghan Mader and Madi Kammer after both reached on singles.

Four batters later, Olivia Planck singled, scoring Addison Smith and Foy.

After a LauRie Harmless walk, Ashley Fulton hit Sydnie Raisor home.

In that second inning, Hanover tagged Baughman with five hits, over half their total for the game.

The Quakers came out in the bottom of the second and tied the game with a Cornett single, which scored Scully, and a Wilson sacrifice fly, which scored Rachel Berry.

The Quakers would get another four runs in the bottom of the third off a Berry single to right, scoring Addysen Stevens, then on a Berry-Cornett double-steal.

Judaea Wilson hit the ball off the fence over Addison Smith's head in right with the bases loaded, scoring Franz and Berry for an 11-5 lead.

After a quiet two innings for both starters, the Quakers ended it in the bottom of the sixth.

With runners on second and third, Berry takes a 2-0 pitch just short of the fence, scoring Harding and Alasandra Spears, giving the Quakers the eight-run margin to end the game 13-5.

Cornett had one RBI and two runs in this game.

Wilson went 2-3 with one run and four RBIs.

Berry went 2-3, stealing one base, scoring two runs, and driving in three.

Franz went 2-3, scoring three times.

GAME TWO

Game two saw Hanover strike first in the top of the second when Sydnie Raisor got one through the left side with the bases loaded, scoring Lulu Van Beek.

The Quakers would strike, though, in the bottom of the third when Hayley Johnson placed one just inside the right field line and rolled it into the corner for a two-run triple, scoring Schwab and Wilson for the 2-1 lead.

That lead held until the fifth, when Harmless hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Planck and tying the game at 2.

Harmless would prove anything but because, in the bottom of the sixth, she would hit a single to right, scoring Planck again for a 3-2 lead.

Foy would score on a Laney Starbuck wild pitch with no outs in the top of the seventh, giving the Panthers a 4-2 lead.

The Quakers never yielded in the bottom of the seventh, with their backs to the wall.

Cornett would send a 0-1 double over Fulton's head, with Franz on first and one out to score Franz to trim the lead to 4-3.

After Wilson flew out to left field for the second out and hope waning, Schwab sent a 2-0 pitch to the right-center gap, scoring Cornett from second to tie the game and send it into extras.

In the top of the eighth, Fulton would ground out to Franz, scoring Wims for the 5-4 lead, but Starbuck held steadfast, sitting the Panthers down 1-2-3.

Hardesty sent a 2-2 screamer up the middle in the bottom of the eighth. CiCi Harding, running from second, just beat out the tag to tie the game at 5.

The next batter, Scully sent a 0-1 middle-of-the-plate fastball to the left-center gap, too far out of the reach of either Fulton in left or Planck in center, as Hardesty sprinted home for the game-winning run.

Cornett had an RBI and a run scored.

Scully went 2-4 and that game-winning RBI Double.

Hardesty went 2-4 with a double, RBI and run scored.

Wilson went 2-4 with one run.
