Quakers Swept By Asbury On The Road

(WILMORE, Ky.) - The Wilmington Quakers fell behind early in both games to the Asbury University Eagles, losing 10-5 and 10-6 in Wilmore, Kentucky, on Tuesday afternoon.

In both games, Asbury tagged the Quaker starters in the bottom of the first for a run and jumped out to an early lead.

In game one, Asbury held the lead throughout the game, keeping the Quakers at a distance throughout.

However, in the second game, the Quakers took a two-run lead before yielding five runs in the bottom of the second, and the Eagles rode that momentum to a sweep of the Quakers.

Kori Cornett went 6-8 on the day with a double, scoring three of the Quakers 11 runs across the doubleheader. Samantha Schwab went 4-7 on the day with two doubles and two RBI.

Judaea Wilson went 4-7 on the day with two RBI. Jocelyn Franz went 4-7 on the day with a double and a triple, scoring one run.

Game One

Schwab started the scoring party for the Quakers, sending a double to center, scoring Wilson to narrow the Eagles lead to 4-1. Then, after yielding two more runs and trailing 6-1, Alasandra Spears singled to score Cornett.

Entering the final inning, trailing 10-3 with the bases loaded and no outs, Schwab hit a sacrifice fly ball to left-center field, scoring Cornett but leaving Wilson and Spears at first and second with one down.

Then Jocelyn Franz walked on five pitches, loading the bases again for Haley Johnson.

Johnson then, down 1-2, fouled off a pitch and took a ball high before hitting a liner at the third baseman, scoring Spears, but Asbury got Wilson out, leaving runners at first and second with two down, trailing 10-5.

The rally ended when Ashley Jo Hardesty hit her second pitch hard to third but got thrown out at first.

Quakers starter Laney Starbuck yielded a home run and a third-inning double in the opening inning to Natalie Ison and a two-run home run to Moira Tinsley in the bottom of the third while striking out one and walking two in 2.1 innings.

Belle Baughman gave up five runs and seven hits over 2.2 innings, walking two. Gracey Dearmon pitched the final inning, giving up three hits and one run, walking one and striking out one.

Game Two

Cornett tied the game for the Quakers in the bottom of the second with a bunt back to the pitcher and aggressive running by Hardesty, just two pitches after Claire Scully hit a bloop single to short right field, dropping right in front of the right fielder.

Wilson then came up, following a Spears walk, with Cornett on third and Spears on second, and blasts one past the shortstop that cleared the bases and gave the Quakers a 3-1 lead.

Johnson was responsible for scoring the next three Quaker runs, driving in Schwab on an infield fly that gets lost with one down in the third and a home run to straight-away center field, scoring Schwab.

Makenzie O'Neil went three innings, yielding eight runs over three hits and nine walks, striking out two. Dearmon came in for three innings, giving up two runs over five hits and three walks.
