(WILMINGTON, Ohio) - The Quakers fell in their season opener 65-47 to UC Santa Cruz in the second game of the Fred Raizk Memorial Tournament.
The visiting Banana Slugs came out firing in the first quarter. After tying the score at 4-4, the visitors went on an 18-3 run in the rest of the quarter. UC Santa Cruz shot lights out, shooting 61% from the field and 40% from three to lead 22-7 heading into the second quarter.
Wilmington improved defensively in the next quarter but still struggled shooting. The Quakers held the Banana Slugs to nine points, but Wilmington only scored two points from an Ashton Harris layup.
The Quakers improved in the second half. Wilmington outscored UC Santa Cruz 14-11 in the third quarter. Jazz Johnson scored five points in the third, along with four points from Stephanie Altstaetter.
Gabby Russell went 4/4 from the charity stripe to open the fourth quarter. Ashton Harris scored a layup and then Sierra McCoin nailed a three-pointer. Trailing 52-35, the Quakers clawed back. Harris and Johnson each had another layup to cut the lead to 55-39. Back-to-back layups by Russell brought Wilmington within 13, trailing 56-43. Olivia Trusty made a layup, and Ashton Harris had a steal on the next possession as Sierra McCoin made her shot to put the Quakers down 60-47 late. The comeback was too late for Wilmington, losing 65-47.
