(WILMINGTON, Ohio) - Wilmington concluded their season sweeping The College of Wooster in three sets on Senior Night.
The Quakers celebrated their four seniors prior to tonight's match. Right-Sider Hitter Sarah Brown, Setter Kyra Frasier, Defensive Specialist Jarika Hart, and Middle Hitter Gabby Russell.
Wilmington jumped ahead to a 4-0 lead with kills from Sarah Brown and Emelia Mohler. Wooster came back and the teams were tied 10-10 in the middle of the set after a kill by Paige Shouse. The Quakers and Fighting Scots stayed neck and neck in the first set. A kill by Brinlee Preston put Wilmington ahead 18-16 late. Another kill from Preston and one from Magee Fain gave the Quakers a 21-17 lead and forced the Fighting Scots to use a timeout. Back-to-back kills by Brown, who was assisted by Kyra Frasier, clinched a 25-19 victory for Wilmington in the first set.
Wooster and Wilmington fought back and forth throughout the second set, tying each other at almost every other point. Locked at 16-16, the Fighting Scots and Quakers could not break away from each other. Kills by Sarah Brown and Brinlee Preston gave Wilmington an 18-16 lead, once again drawing a timeout from Wooster. Leading 21-20, the Quakers took a timeout and right after the break Shouse's kill put Wilmington up two.
The Fighting Scots retook the lead 23-22 but a kill by Aubrey Clark tied the sides at 23-23. Wilmington's defense stifled Wooster's attack in the last two points, pressuring the Fighting Scots to make two straight attack errors as the Quakers won the second set 25-23.
Trailing 6-3 to begin the third set, Wilmington went on a 5-0 run to take an 8-6 lead. Wooster retook the lead, but a service ace by Logan McQuillin tied the set 13-13. The Quakers went on a 5-2 run featuring kills by Emelia Mohler, Sarah Brown, and Brinlee Preston to jump ahead 18-15. Another kill by Mohler gave Wilmington a 19-16 lead late, forcing Wooster to use a timeout.
With the Quakers leading 23-19, the Fighting Scots called another timeout. An attack error by Wooster gave Wilmington a 24-19 lead. On the next serve, Kyra Frasier delivered a service ace on match point to win the third set 25-19 to sweep the Fighting Scots 3-0.
The Quakers will be back on the court next fall.
