(ALBION, Mich.) – The Wilmington College wrestling team competed in their first scored tournament of the season Sunday at the Albion Invitational, hosted by Albion College.
For the second week in a row, sophomore
Thane McCoy led the Quakers, as he won the 157-pound weight class, going 4-0. He is now 9-0 overall this season. He started off his day with a 22-4 tech. fall win over Cristian Hernandez of Ohio Wesleyan University. McCoy followed this with a pin in the quarterfinals in 1:02 over Adrian College's Olen Moshier.
In the semifinals, McCoy battled East Stroudsburg University's Gavin Reynolds. He fell behind 5-0 early in the first period but hung tough and grabbed an escape point and takedown. Reynolds held a 6-4 lead after the first period. McCoy made it 6-5 heading into the final period. Reynolds chose bottom to start the period and grabbed an escape point for a 7-5 lead. McCoy stepped up throughout the remainder of the match, using three takedowns for nine points and an eventual 14-10 decision win.
He dominated the championship match over Albion's Justin Gorman, taking a 6-2 lead after the first period and never looking back in a 17-5 major decision win.
Sophomore
Asher LeBeau took the long way at 149 pounds to earn a sixth-place finish. He won by fall in his first match at 6:48. He lost his next match, but then ripped off four straight wins, with three of the wins coming by fall.
His other was a 13-10 decision win over Adrian's Liam Totten. There were fireworks in the first period, as LeBeau came away with a 7-6 lead. LeBeau picked up a takedown and escape in the second to hold a strong 11-8 lead heading into the final period. He held strong and came away with the win. His final two matches were no contests in favor of his opponent.
Sophomore
Quintez Pratt was the final placer for Wilmington, taking seventh at 165 pounds. He dropped his first match, before winning by fall in his two next matches to get back on track. Pratt fell by major decision to head into the battle for seventh. He took down East Stroudsburg's Christopher Ross by 10-3 decision, riding three takedowns to finish his day 3-2.
Also winning multiple matches on the day for Wilmington were freshmen
Zander Ward and
Braylon Vaughn. Ward scratched out a 2-1 decision win in his first match at 141 pounds against Adrian's Kenneth Thomas, using a late stalling penalty for the win. He lost his next match before pinning Ohio Wesleyan's Chris Rider in 2:41 for his final win of the day.
Vaughn worked his way into the quarterfinals at 149 pounds, winning his first two matches by fall and default before dropping his first two matches of the day.
