Fourth Quarter Struggles Lead to Quaker Bowl Loss vs. Earlham

Box Score (RICHMOND, Ind.) – The Wilmington College women's basketball lost their Quaker Bowl matchup Saturday afternoon on the road at Earlham College, 78-69. The game was played on the campus of IU East. Heading into the final quarter, Wilmington led 53-50, but they struggled in the fourth quarter en route to their loss.

Both teams traded points in the first quarter, with Wilmington trailing 13-12 with 1:35 remaining in the period. However, Earlham used a 7-3 rally to take a 20-15 lead into the second period.

Wilmington worked their way back in the second quarter with a 13-8 run to fall behind by just one point at 28-27. Freshman Jazz Johnson led the way during this rally with five points, as four different Quakers scored. Wilmington kept fighting in the quarter, until eventually a layup by Ashton Harris tied the game at 32-32 and a Johnson layup with under a minute to play in the half gave Wilmington a 34-32 lead at the break.

The Quakers started the second half on a 9-2 run for a 43-34 lead with 5:02 left in the third. Stephanie Altstaetter scored all nine points during this stretch for Wilmington. They kept the lead throughout the remainder of the third period, but Earlham ended the quarter on a 16-10 run to trail by just three heading into the final 10 minutes of action.

In the last quarter, the two teams were tied at 59-59 with just under five minutes left and they continued to trade points until it was all knotted up at 65-65. From that point forward, it was all Earlham as they ended the game on a 13-4 rally for a 78-69 win.

  • Stephanie Altstaetter scored a team high 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the season.
