Late Touchdown Leads Football to Loss on Senior Day to Conclude their Season

(WILMINGTON, Ohio) – The Wilmington College football team finished their 2025 season Saturday afternoon on Senior Day, falling in a tight contest to Capital University, 28-27.

Before the game, the Quakers recognized 15 players and one student coach that are graduating from the program.

These players are Brandon Mitchell, Nick Bucksath, Luke Wroten, Jack Sandberg, De'Anta Sanon, Jackson Combs, Dylan Alltop, Samuel Brooks, Bryce Hodapp, Kellen Strayer, Demarco Owens, Isaac Ross, Ethan Williams, Logan Lovins, and Andrew Thompson. They also honored four-year student coach Damian Dean.

The Quakers got off to a great start, running right down the field on seven plays for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead. A big 35-yard pass to freshman Xander Logan and a Demarco Owens 14 yard run set the Quakers up to find Joseph Spann for a 10-yard touchdown.

Capital scored on their ensuing possession and the game was tied at 7-7 heading into the second quarter. Neither team scored on their first possessions of the second quarter before a Jamaun Clark interception and 45-yard return set Wilmington up inside the 10-yard line. Two plays later and Bryce Stout stood inside the end zone for a 14-7 Quakers lead.

At the end of the half, Wilmington worked quickly down the field, getting the ball with just 1:34 remaining. A big 22-yard pass to De'Anta Sanon set the Quakers up for a few shots at the end zone. They couldn't score but settled for a 24-yard Camden Marx field goal and 17-7 halftime lead.

The Quakers kicked another field goal on their first possession of the second half. They had the ball down to the six-yard line but lost a pair of yards and couldn't get any further before a 25-yard Marx field goal. A 29-yard Owens pass and catch set the Quakers up for success early in the drive.

Capital scored on their following possession to make the game 20-14, but Wilmington answered right back with an Isaac Ross pass to Xander Logan for 77 yards and a Quakers 27-14 lead. The Comets answered once again with a touchdown of their own and the game went into the final quarter, with Wilmington leading 27-21.

Capital scored midway through the fourth quarter for a 28-27 lead with just under six minutes to play. Both teams stalled on offense and things looked bleak for the Quakers before a Jarett Thompson interception gave them the ball deep in Capital territory. However, a personal foul penalty ruined the drive and gave Capital the ball back. Wilmington had one final shot at the end of the game, making it into Comets territory, but a close play was ruled a no catch and the game ended.
