Quakers Struggle Late in Loss to Mount St. Joseph

(WILMINGTON, Ohio) – The Wilmington College baseball team played the Mount St. Joseph University Lions Monday afternoon at home on Tewksbury-Delaney Field. They lost the game 14-9. Wilmington had 11 hits in the game and held an 8-5 lead heading into the eighth inning, but a seven-run Lions frame doomed the Quakers. Wilmington is right back on the field for their final non-conference game of the season tomorrow at Earlham College.

The Lions struck first, scoring one run in the first inning. A two-out double steal with runners on first and third brought in the run and made it 1-0. Mount St. Joseph added one run in the second and two in the third to go ahead 4-0.

Wilmington struck for four runs and tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. A trio of singles loaded the bases with one out. Kyle Jennings delivered a huge three-RBI double over the center fielder's head to cut the lead to 4-3. The next play saw an error by the shortstop that allowed Jennings to score the tying run.

A two-out Carter Scheben three-run homerun over the left center field fence gave the Quakers a 7-4 lead in the bottom of the fifth. Both teams scored a single run in the sixth, with Wilmington's coming thanks to a two-out Jared Lammert single down the right field line.

The Lions big seven-run inning came in the eighth to give them a 12-8 advantage. A J.C. Calhoun infield single plated one run for the Quakers in the bottom of the eighth, but that was the last run they would get in the loss.

Notables

  • Carter Scheben led the team with three hits and tied with Kyle Jennings for the game-high of three runs batted in (RBI). Scheben has eight RBI over his last three games.
  • Jared Lammert, Evan Kelsey, and Max Gildea all had two hits.
  • Kelsey, Scheben, and Jennings all scored two runs.
  • Wilmington had 11 hits in the game. This is their 10th game this season with 10 or more base hits.
  • Trent Mendenhall struck out five in a solid five-inning start for the Quakers.
