(DANVILLE, Va.) – The Wilmington College wrestling team competed in five duals Saturday as they competed at the Averett University Cougar Duals. The Quakers lost to host Averett University, 35-9, and to Coker University 34-9. They then won their last three duals of the day, 37-14 over Randolph College, 40-13 over Lincoln Memorial University and 32-20 over Southern Virginia University. Wilmington is now 4-4 overall in dual competition this season.
Standouts on the day for the Quakers included
Jackson Collins at 141 pounds, who is a freshman transfer from Kent State University. He went 3-1 overall today and had two falls against Randolph's Noah Williams and Southern Virginia's Richie Kulessa. His other win was an 11-7 decision against Averett's Mauricio Reyes.
Another transfer for the Quakers is junior
James Rankin who won a pair of matches for the Quakers at both 157 and 149 pounds. He beat Averett's Cooper Comer at 157 by way of 10-9 decision and Randolph's Adon Overstreet at 149 by sudden victory.
Other Quakers with multiple, non-forfeit victories during the day were
Thane McCoy,
Cornell Johnson, and
Ryder Pierce. McCoy wrestled at both 157 and 165 today for Wilmington. He beat Coker's Dustin Flinn by 7-1 decision, Randolph's Jordan Nutter by a 15-0 tech. fall, Lincoln Memorial's James Thaxton by a 15-2 major decision and Southern Virginia's Corbin Mecham by way of a fall in 1:51.
Johnson wrestled at heavyweight and had a pair of falls over Randolph's Joshua Spivey in 3:18 and Southern Virginia's Jonathan Cox in 3:15. Pierce, at 197 pounds, beat Averett's Jacob Jimenez in a 14-8 decision and Randolph's Harriss Sullivan by fall in 3:23.
