(WILMINGTON, Ohio) – The Wilmington College football team dropped their senior day game against the visiting Heidelberg University Student Princes this afternoon, 30-20. The Quakers held a 14-7 lead late in the first half, but a few mistakes led to two Student Princes touchdowns and a 21-14 deficit at the half and an eventual loss. Wilmington sits at 1-8 overall and 1-7 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) heading into their final game of the season next week at Capital University.
Neither team scored in the first quarter. The Quakers scored on their first drive of the second quarter, a drive that overlapped from the end of the first. Big plays included a 15-yard pass to
Saa'lih Muhammed, a pass interference call on Heidelberg, and a 27-yard pass to
Joseph Spann. This set up a
Nathan Throckmorton two-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 lead.
The Student Princes answered with a touchdown of their own to tie the score at 7-7. Later in the quarter,
Samuel Brooks picked off a pass from Ty Poorman and brought it back 40 yards to the endzone for a Quakers touchdown and a 14-7 lead.
The Quakers stopped the Student Princes on their next possession after the pick six. Unfortunately, a muffed punt return by Wilmington resulted in a Heidelberg recovery at the Quakers 12-yard line, where they took advantage of the field position and scored to tie the game at 14-14. The Student Princes stopped Wilmington and connected on a 50-yard touchdown pass to take a 21-14 lead into the half.
Neither team put any points on the board in the third quarter. Heidelberg kicked an early field goal in the fourth quarter and would add two more to take a 30-14 lead. The Quakers scored one more time after
Isaiah Henderson led a drive, mostly with his legs, to the Student Princes six-yard line. Here, he found senior
Ashton Griffith for a six-yard touchdown, before a failed two-point conversion attempt kept the score at 30-20, which would be the final score.
