(WILMINGTON, Ohio) – The Wilmington College wrestling team had their first dual of the season Tuesday night in Fred Raizk Arena at Hermann Court. They battled last year's Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) champions, the Baldwin Wallace University Yellow Jackets. The Quakers lost 41-12 but had some solid matches against a great team.
After a pair of exhibition matches, the dual got underway at 125 pounds. The first four matches were determined by fall, tech. fall, fall, and fall to give Baldwin Wallace a 23-0 advantage.
The 157-pound match between
Thane McCoy and Antonio Shelley was a good one. McCoy went into the third period winning 7-5, but Shelley got four nearfall points and picked up the riding time point to take the decision victory at 10-7.
The next two matches went to Baldwin Wallace by fall before
Hunter Randall got the Quakers on the board with a fall at 184 to give them six team points. Randall found himself down big in the match, 10-1 to Brandon Burkhart. However, Burkhart made a mistake, which allowed Randall to get him on his back and get a pin in 4:47.
Ryder Pierce would keep the Quakers momentum rolling at 197, pinning Dominic Pagan in 1:39 after holding a 4-3 lead in the match. The two heavyweights in
Cornell Johnson and Angelo Camargo nearly went to overtime at 1-1, but Camargo got a late takedown and won by 4-1 decision to conclude the dual in the Yellow Jackets favor at 41-12. Despite the loss, the Quakers made progress after losing 50-0 to Baldwin Wallace last season.
