Women's Basketball Falls at Capital Wednesday to Kick Off 2024

(COLUMBUS, Ohio) – The Wilmington College women's basketball team traveled to Capital University Wednesday night to take on the Comets. The Quakers lost 68-50 to fall to 2-9 overall this season and 0-5 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC).

The first quarter was low scoring, with the Comets taking a 6-0 lead less than three minutes into the contest. After a Cassidy Lovett made free throw with 6:01 remaining in the first quarter, the score held at 6-1 until Lovett knocked down another free throw with 2:30 left in the period. Another two Lovett free throws would follow to cut the lead to 6-4. The Comets would hold a 9-6 lead after the first quarter, as the Quakers didn't make a single shot in the period.

The Quakers first made shot of the game came from Lovett with 6:10 remaining in the half to cut the lead to 17-8. The Comets would continue to add to their lead, pushing it to 13 at 23-10. Wilmington was outscored throughout the remainder of the half 11-8, and they went into the break down 34-18.

The Quakers outscored the Comets 15-8 throughout the first seven minutes of the third quarter, cutting the lead to 42-33. ZahKyria Walker had eight points during this Quakers rally. Wilmington would continue to pressure Capital in the quarter, getting the lead down to seven after a jumper from Natalie Rupp pushed it to 46-39 with 39 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Wilmington would trail 48-39 heading into the final period.

After outscoring the Comets 21-14 in the third quarter, Capital would get their revenge in the fourth, outscoring Wilmington 20-11 and running away with a 68-50 victory.

Notables

  • Cassidy Lovett scored 15 points in the game, giving her six games this season with 14 or more points, while having three straight games with double-digit points.
  • ZahKyria Walker also scored 15 points for Wilmington. She has six games scoring in double-digits this season for the Quakers and has accomplished the feat three games in a row.
  •  Freshman Stephanie Altstaetter grabbed 10 rebounds, her second game this season with double digit boards.
  • Lovett led the team with three assists, while the trio of Keetyn Hupp, Lovett, and Walker all had a pair of steals.
  • Hupp led the team with two blocks.

What's Up Next

Wilmington returns to the court Saturday afternoon for a game against the Heidelberg University Student Princes on Alumni Day in Hermann Court at 2:00 P.M. The Quakers will be honoring their 2004 National Championship team at halftime of the contest.

The Quakers won both games in the series last season against the Student Princes.
