WC gets plenty shots, falls to OWU

Box Score

Getting shots hasn't been the problem the last two games for the Wilmington College women's soccer team, it's finishing their ample opportunities.

For the second consecutive game the Quakers dominated the shot total, but lost as they fell to Ohio Wesleyan Wednesday, 1-0, in non-conference at Charlie Gilhart Field. It's the second straight loss for WC after winning four straight.

Wilmington outshot the Battlin' Bishops 11-1 in the first half, and 20-4 for the game.

"We outshot our opponent again, but didn't take advantage of our opportunities," said head coach Steve Spirk. "We have to have better composure. The chances we got, you can't get better looks. Now we're pressing a little bit because the ball isn't falling for us."

The Quakers had several excellent chances, but ultimately didn't find the back of the net. Sophomore Rachelle Bowen led the team with five shots, while Brooke Lamb added four.

Meanwhile, OWU seized its opportunity in the game's 66th minute for the only goal of the game.

"Instead of making a play, we dove at the ball, and then got muscled," said Spirk. "We didn't keep our composure, got muscled off the ball and gave up a goal."

Freshman Grace Hignite (4-2-1) recorded one save for WC.

Wilmington (5-3-1) hosts Manchester 5 p.m. Saturday in non-conference play at Charlie Gilhart Field.
