Women's soccer shut out by Mount Union

Box Score

The Wilmington College women's soccer team lost their first Ohio Athletic Conference game of the season, falling 1-0 to Mount Union Saturday at Charlie Gilhart Field.

In the minds of the WC coaching staff, it was goal that shouldn't have been allowed.

"One no-call in the first half was the difference in the game," said head coach Steve Spirk. "It was another game that stat-wise we dominated and lost."

Wilmington outshot the Purple Raiders 17-2, but Mount Union scored the game's lone tally in the 36th minute as a through ball found a streaking player behind the defense and she was able to get the ball past WC keeper Grace Hignite (Clayton, OH/Northmont).

Sophomore Rachelle Bowen (Xenia, OH/Xenia) finished with a team-high six shots, while senior Jenni Marck (Cincinnati, OH/Wyoming) unleashed three shots. It was Marck's third shot of the game that was probably Wilmington's best chance.

"Their goalkeeper came up with a big save," said Spirk.

As she has done all season long, Marck was able to rise above the opponent and get a head on a corner kick. However, this time the goalkeeper made a diving one-handed stop to preserve the victory.

The Fightin' Quakers (8-4-1 overall, 2-1 OAC) host Capital 7 p.m. Tuesday at Charlie Gilhart Field.
