DEFIANCE – For the second time this season, the Wilmington College women's lacrosse team scored late in regulation to force overtime. Unfortunately for the Fightin' Quakers, they couldn't carry the momentum into the extra periods, and they fell in double overtime to Defiance, 12-11, Saturday in non-conference action.

Senior Sammy Koerner (Fairfield, OH/Hamilton Badin) scored on a free position shot with 1:44 remaining in the second half to send the game into overtime. It was her team-high fifth goal of the game.

Wilmington scored the first two goals of the game, and led for most of the first half.

Senior Rachel Gutowski (Petoskey, MI/Petoskey) scored two of WC's first three goals to stake Wilmington to the early 3-1 lead. The teams traded goals until the Yellow Jackets scored three straight to take its only lead of the half, 6-5.

Gutowski and Koerner each found the back of the net in the final minute of the half, giving the Fightin' Quakers the 7-6 halftime lead.

After Defiance opened the second half with three consecutive goals, Wilmington answered with three of their own to reclaim the lead with 14:45 remaining. The Yellow Jackets had answers at 12:50 and 12:04 to take the lead. It was almost enough, but Koerner came away with the equalizer late.

Gutowski finished with four goals and two assists, while freshman Kiki Hall (Westerville, OH/Central) added two goals.

Sophomore Emily Phipps (Heath, OH/Heath) finished with 12 saves.

Wilmington (0-9) travels to Franklin 7 p.m. Wednesday.
