Men's Cross Country to Compete at All-Ohio Intercollegiate Championships Saturday




WILMINGTON, Ohio – The Wilmington College men's cross country team travels to Akron for the All-Ohio Intercollegiate Cross Country Championships on Saturday.

The Race: The eight-kilometer championship race is slated to begin at 2:45 p.m. with the open eight-kilometer race scheduled 90 minutes afterward.

The Teams: Wilmington will be joined by many NCAA Division I, II and III institutions as well as NAIA schools from the state of Ohio.

The Coach: Ron Combs is in his 23rd season as head cross country coach at Wilmington College. A 1993 graduate of Wilmington, Combs was a member of the only cross country team to win a conference title in school history. Also the head track & field coach at the College, Combs led the Fightin' Quakers to two top-10 finishes nationally with a sixth place finish at the 2002 NCAA Division III Men's Indoor Track & Field Championships and a seventh place mark at the 2004 Women's Indoor Track & Field Championships.

The Runners - Championship: Nine Quakers – Cameron Phelps, Evan Whitaker, Gage Clemens, Hunter Stith, Griffin Stith, Austin Wampler, Taton Bertsch, Ryan Honkomp and Jacob Whitaker – will compete in the championship race. Phelps was the top finisher for Wilmington at the Cedarville Friendship Invitational two weeks ago, finish the eight-kilometer course in 27:43.9. Evan Whitaker finished two spots and less than five seconds behind Phelps.

The Runners – Open: Matt Baker, George Rickett, Elliot Phillimore, Evan Brandon, Julio Olivarez and Sam Foote represent the Quaker contingent in the open race.
